Liisa cried out, Dragonovic´ pushed himself back into his seat, Jordain cursed and Picot reverently crossed himself, clenching his eyes tightly as the overloaded aircraft plunged into the void.

Two hundred feet below the edge of the cliff the wind buffered against the face of the mountain and soared upwards: an invisible fist. When the air downwind of a range of hills is set in harmonic motion it creates fast-rising air known as a wave lift. Raglan had taken the biggest risk of all. Fly off the edge of the cliff and pray to God the wave lift would keep them airborne. The light aircraft responded like a feather on the wind and climbed, finding height and power.

They cheered, a shout of joy at being alive and the momentary thrill that the stomach-churning ride gave them. Only Dragonovic´ remained silent, although he had enjoyed the risk, notching up another victory against mortality. The men were loud and swore like the soldiers they were. They joked with Dragonovic´ and he allowed them a smile that created a moment of camaraderie.

Raglan broke the mood. ‘Start looking,’ he commanded. ‘A plane, a broken plane, down there – somewhere.’

Dragonovic´ glanced at Raglan. ‘The sooner we find it the better.’
